Rice v Noodles

Rice, it could be said, is probably China’s most famous staple food.

However, a significant proportion of the population will choose to eat noodles rather than rice. Rice is available pretty much everywhere and noodles are often the domain of northern provinces.

During meals, dishes (anything from vegetables to meat or soup) will be served all together, but in some provinces rice is served last/later. Rice is often sticky (steamed) and although a chopstick challenge, it is still possible handle – just. Noodles present a different and awkward challenge. There are also many types of noodles.

Either way, some Chinese also struggle too so you shouldn’t feel too uncomfortable. It's a long process to learn but you'd do well to practice before coming to China to give yourself a head-start.
