Beds

Apart from the Western style, premium hotels, at most hotels and homes, hard beds are the norm! Hard beanbag pillows are sometimes used in hotels. These hard pillows take a while to get used to. It’s not uncommon to wake up with a ‘dead arm’ due to the solidity of the beds and pillows.

The Chinese often do evening exercises, which allows them to sleep like logs and cope rather well with the bed situation. For foreigners, it’s often a very uncomfortable state of affairs that can take a while and a number of restless nights to get used to. That said, Chinese beds are appropriate for those who may have back problems and you could actually start to see improvements in your spinal posture.

During the summer months, a great accessory if you’re without -or don’t like- air conditioning, is a sort of bed-spread made of small wooden or bambooslats. This rolls out across the bed and acts as a sheet for the night, which is actually quite comfortable.

Just great for those hot and humid nights of difficult sleep!
