Kissing

The showing of affection in public is still quite unusual throughout China, including many bigger cities. You may see affection, cuddles or kissing with younger generations but generally this is not something you should do openly.

Nighttime parks that litter cities can be awash with young couples on dark park benches having a cuddle. It is curious how coy the Chinese are on this topic. If you kiss, even a cheek kiss to your partner, people around you will definitely notice and giggle (with elderly Chinese probably looking on with interest).

You will however, see plenty of male partners carrying the bags, or a bunch of flowers, for their girlfriends. Displays of romance is sometimes seen while walking around, especially in the more relaxed parts of town, such as the vintage shopping areas with many young people.

But simply, it is best to avoid any attempt to show affection in public. Holding hands with your partner however is perfectly fine. It’s not offensive to them but is simply something best left for the privacy of the home in a still very traditional China! Islamic Xinjiang also tends to conform to the same kind of social taboos as China proper.
