There is hardly any crime against foreigners in China, which is quite remarkable for a country the size of China.
Watch out for pickpockets and overcharging however, the former lurk around train and underground (subway) stations. Pickpockets can use long tweezers to get into your pocket or bag so zip it up and put it away. Burying your wallet in a good pocket may not be enough of a deterrent and it goes without saying that backpackers should be extra vigilant with their numerous zips and pockets.
However, this has also been dealt with in most major cities so even this is now not a major issue. Still, precaution is good.
Chinese police are extremely helpful and want foreigners to enjoy China as much as possible. The Western media doesn't give them the justice they deserve through their hard work and friendly approach. Of course, you should also follow the law, that goes without saying, which includes no illegal work and no drugs whatsoever. In these case, you be takena way and your phone will be confiscated and checked fully.
(See Copies (fake stuff) for money problems and bargaining for overcharging).
