Kissing:

The showing of affection is still quite unacceptable throughout China, including many bigger well-known cities. You may see affection, cuddles or kissing with younger generations but generally this is not something you should do. Nighttime parks that litter cities can be awash with young couples, even older generations, getting close in the shadows or just strolling together which surely shows a cultural ‘gap’ between the need for affection and the social norms that govern it. It is funny how coy the Chinese still are on this topic. If you kiss, even a cheek kiss to your partner, people around you will definitely notice and giggle (with elderly Chinese probably looking on with dissatisfaction). But simply, it is best to avoid any attempt to show affection in public. This may even include holding hands with your lover in public. It’s not offensive to them but is simply something best left for the privacy of the home in a still very traditional China! Islamic Xinjiang also tends to conform to the same kind of social taboos as China proper. There are some gay nightclubs in the bigger cities and in these establishments gay kissing occurs.
